By the late 80's 17 Pygmies had become a trio with poet Louise Bialik and signed to a major label. The current releases "13 Blackbirds" (2007) & "Last Train" (2006 - 7" Vinyl single), released by indie label Trakwerx, features Louise Bialik, Jackson Del Rey, Jeff Brenneman (White Glove Test), and various other additional artists invited to share their talents such as violinist Jean Sudbury, classical guitarist Meg Maryatt, cellist Tanya Haden, Cult With No Name (Erik Stein & Jon Boux), Lea Reis, and gospel singer Jacquie James 17 Pygmies - Captured In Ice Label: Resistance Records (2) Catalog#: RR-01946 Format: Vinyl, LP Country: US Released: 1985 Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: New Wave Credits: Engineer - Ethan James , Richard Andrews Keyboards - Jeff Morris Tepper* Mastered By - John Golden Performer - Debbie Spinelli , Fey Ruza , Philip Drucker , Robert Loveless Producer - Philip Drucker , Robert Loveless Notes: Recorded at Radio Tokyo. Yep, this is the same group, and though the music is more lively and a bit more mainstream, it is still subtle and interesting. The overt Middle Eastern influences are gone, though the intro and ringing guitar lines of "Icarus" show that they aren't entirely forgotten. There is considerable variation here. Though much of the album consists of upbeat and intelligent folk-pop, "Autumn Cathedral," has a cinematic quality and more than a bit of Ennio Morricone influence. "Home Again" is a standout track, a haunting, bleak, and poetic word portrait of someone standing in their parents' silent home and cherishing old memories. Though Captured in Ice was not as theatrical and eclectic as Welcome, the better-known release that followed, it is still a fascinating and compelling album that bears repeated listening. This exquisite piece of retro music history is a vinyl sound recording (not a CD). Please visit the A Sound Deal store for similar items and information on grading and shipping.
