TRACKS:1.GIVIN' IT UP IS GIVIN' UP2.SETTLE FOR MY LOVEPatrice was a genuine musical prodigy. She began studying music at age three and was giving piano recitals at six. Not surprisingly, her favorite instrument remains the piano. Her jazz roots began to sprout in high school, where she played in a jazz lab band call the Msingi workshop. It was founded by Reggie Andrews, who has helped Patrice produce all her albums. ?That was a brand new experience for me,? Patrice says. ?Reggie was a great inspiration. He taught kids that music could be an evocation, not just an avocation. And, he opened up my piano playing to a new perspective; I learned to play what I heard inside?to improvise.? Though she’d never toured on her own, Patrice can hardly wait’ to get her new act on the road. ?I’m looking forward to getting out there and showing people what I’m all about.? The tour is scheduled to begin next month and Washington (??one of my favorite cities,? she says) will be an early stop. ?I love jazz,? Patrice says, ?and I hope to prove my improvisational skills when I perform in DC.? Patrice also owns up to a love for classical music. ?I play classical pieces and standards,? she says. ?I’m still trying to master the instrument. I’ll play Prokofiev or Brahms or Debussy. I work from an interpretative standpoint, trying to get the instrument to speak.? Smitty: Yes, I can feel that. You and Patrise (Rushen) went to the same high school. Gerald: Yes, Patrise was a couple of years ahead of me in high school, but we played in the Msingi Workshop, which was the jazz ensemble at the time that was headed by Reggie Andrews back in 1972-73. That was a great experience for me because at that point in time at Locke High School where I attended school, it was a nice musical platform for the students there to really spread their wings. We were playing in the marching band, we were playing jazz, we in the concert band, and most of these ensembles were award winning groups that were around either the state of California or different parts of Los Angeles that would compete with other high schools. And it was just a good time to be there because a lot of the musicians that were along with me were people like Gary Bias who is now with Earth Wind and Fire and has been for a number of years, and of course Patrise Rushen is breaking ground as the recording artist that she is. And she was the first black female musical director for the Emmys a few years back. So being around these people can only make you better individually, so that experience of being with her was great. Biography by Ed Hogan Keyboardist/singer/songwriter/arranger/musical director Patrice Rushen has had an outstanding career with several Top Ten R&B hits, including "Haven't You Heard," "Forget Me Nots," "Feels So Real," and "Watch Out." "Forget Me Nots" was the basis of Will Smith's "Men in Black" from the blockbuster movie of the same name on Big Willie Style. R. Kelly's "Remind Me" was sampled from her "You Remind Me," a popular radio-aired LP track from Straight From the Heart. Others who have sampled Rushen's music are Def Jeff (Rushen's "Hang It Up") and Zhane ("Groove Thang"). Born September 30,1954, in Los Angeles, CA, Rushen's parents enrolled her in music classes at U.S.C. when she was three. In her teens, she won a solo competition at the 1972 Monterey Jazz Festival. The attention garnered from this earned her a contract with Prestige Records. After recording three albums and becoming an in-demand session player, Rushen signed with Elektra Records in 1978. Forging an engaging jazz/R&B/funk fusion, she regularly hit the R&B charts. Her five albums for the label were Patrice, Pizzazz, Posh, Straight From the Heart, and Now. Some of these sides can be found on Haven't You Heard:The Best of Patrice Rushen. This exquisite piece of retro music history is a vinyl sound recording (not a CD).
