Secret Ties, which was formed by producer/songwriter/keyboardist Brian Soares in 1985, tended to fare well among young Latinos who were into Latin freestyle artists like Exposé, Sweet Sensation, TKA, and the Cover Girls. But Secret Ties' dance-pop wasn't really freestyle, and it didn't sound like any of those East Coast residents. Soares appreciated Afro-Cuban salsa, but unlike Nayobe or Sandee, he was heavily influenced by Brazilian music. Secret Ties, whose various female vocalists included Linda Harmon, Cheryl Ford, and Christina Veronica, signed with the small, Los Angeles-based Night Wave label in 1986. That year, Night Wave released the group's first single, "Dancin' in My Sleep," which became a major club hit and received a lot of airplay on stations that were friendly to dance-pop. And the following year, Night Wave put out Secret Ties' debut album, All Through the Night. In addition to co-producing the album, Soares wrote most of the songs, including "Dancin' in My Sleep" and the follow-up single "One Night."
