After debuting in the mid-'70s with a string of brilliant roots reggae singles, including the classic "Row, Fisherman, Row," and three albums, HEART OF THE CONGOS, CONGOS ASHANTI and FACE THE MUSIC, Jamaican vocal group Congos disappeared for nearly two decades. In 1997, Watty Burnett, Cedric Myton, and Roydel Johnson reappeared with NATTY DREAD RISES AGAIN. Amazingly, it's as if they'd never left.
The trio's graceful voices are as limber as ever, easily swinging from the simple joy of "Rock of Gibraltar" to the fiery anger of "Sent to Babylon." Lyrically, religion is the Congos' main theme, whether as doctrinaire as "Judgment Day" or as subtle as "Love Is the Answer." While not sounding particularly retro, the bass-heavy, largely organic arrangements and production wisely eschew the synth-heavy gimmickry of much modern reggae in favor of a purer roots style that fits the group's old-school voices and concerns beautifully.

...the numbers have melodies, bridges and choruses that are a great deal more distinctive than a lot of reggae....this is one of the most enjoyable and graceful albums in the style that I've heard.
