Zombie Zombie is one of those rare groups where you can take one look at their name and actually come pretty close to guessing what they sound like based on it. This Parisian duo takes a healthy dose of analogue synths (and other electronic devices) and mingles them with driving drums to basically create soundtracks for chase sequences (where you're being chased by something with bad intentions), graveyards (where the dead tend to rise up and rock-out Return Of The Living Dead style), and racing hearts in general.

Not to be confused with the American band Zombi (who actually craft somewhat similar sounding stuff out of nearly the same source instruments), A Land For Renegades is slightly tongue-in-cheek and a good bit of psychedelic fun. "Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free" launches the album forwards, and droning analogue synths grind and morph over the top of a chugging synth bass as motorik beats keep time. As the song progresses, filtered vocal howls gradually rise in the mix, and the song basically plays out like one of those sequences in a movie where the victim can never seem to keep running without tripping on something. "I'm Afraid Of What's There" is a bit more noir, as a slow breakbeat lumbers away under swirling, layered synths (and more wordless vocals) that conjure up All Hallows Eve.

Basically, the group veers between these two general feelings, with some tracks (like the epic, album-titled "A Land For Renegades") kicking away with a higher BPM and more meaty synths that push things into almost dancey territory while others (like the harpsichord-sampled and generally weird "Texas Rangers") take the pace down a bit and generally try to create a Goblin-esque aura. For good measure, they even through in a very Suicide-esque cover of Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing," Add to the above a love for old-school John Carpenter-style soundtrack work (the arpeggio-laden closer "When I Scream You Scream" is a perfect example) and you get the picture.
