This is one of those now highly collectible "tourist bowls" made by various Indian tribes for their tourist trade, this bowl being Nemadji. It is particularly beautiful and finely done. A light colored clay ceramic bowl, it has a burst of colors surrounding it, heavy in some places, almost invisible in others as you turn the bowl. Measuring 5" tall x 4 1/2" wide at shoulder it is in perfect, sound, original condition with no chips, damage, loss or repair, guaranteed old and authentic. It is has a matte unglazed finish on the outside but the interior is finished with a clear and shiny glaze. There is a small air hole on the bottom. The bowl displays beautifully and is a wonderful example of the combination of old and new American Indian work. It is stamped on the bottom "NEMADJI. . ." ". . .PEAK" "USA". The bowl's decorative panel of paint was dripped as the bowl was turning on its wheel giving it a graceful and elegant swirly effect. It has a rainbow of intense colors: Red, white, yellow, a bit of black that stand out from the natural sandy tan background. The colors either blended together or stayed relatively separate and true. The design is like cloud watching--what you see is entirely up to your imagination. We thought it resembled a scene in the Rockies--mountains, valleys, clouds, water, mist rising, maybe even a smoke signal or two. It's really quite beautiful and a great piece for the discriminating decorator or collector.
