Lancaster and York did not begin as two separate houses. They were branches of the same Plantagenet royal family, descended from Edward III. Their members shared blood, ancestry, royal ambitions, and a common claim to the English crown. The tragedy is that the division developed slowly—through disputed succession, ambitious royal relatives, political factions, dynastic marriages, rebellion, and ultimately competing claims to the throne.
At the center of the story stands a royal dynasty already weakened by generations of conflict.
The reign of Richard IIÂ exposed the dangers of disputed authority. His deposition placed the Lancastrian branch on the throne, but the legitimacy of that seizure would never completely disappear.
