Pinus eldarica, commonly known as the Afghan pine, the mondell pine and the Eldarica pine, is a highly versatile and fast-growing evergreen tree prized for its adaptability and rugged beauty, making it an excellent choice for both residential and commercial landscapes. Native to the Middle East and Central Asia, this pine thrives in hot, dry climates and is exceptionally tolerant of drought, poor soils, wind, and high temperatures—conditions that often challenge other evergreens. It features dense, dark green needles and a symmetrical, upright growth habit that can reach 30 to 50 feet in height with a spread of 20 to 25 feet at maturity. Its uniform shape, rapid growth, and year-round foliage make it a popular option for windbreaks, privacy screens, reforestation projects, and ornamental plantings. Pinus eldarica is also commonly used as a living Christmas tree due to its classic conical form and pleasant fragrance. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance, performs well in full sun, and adapts to various soil types, including sandy or alkaline soils. Whether planted as a single specimen or in rows for screening, Afghan pine adds structure, shade, and resilience to the landscape, making it a valuable long-term investment for property owners seeking both function and aesthetic appeal. It is widely grown in the southwestern United States as an attractive, ornamental and heat and drought tolerant pine tree.
