Agave seeds usually start to germinate after two to three weeks and they will continue to germinate over several months.
Good moisture, good drainage,very bright light, heat and aeration are important factors for high germination rates. Do not give up on your seeds keeping your soil constantly moist will ensure eventual success.


Fill pots with sterilized potting mix consisting of half perlite, or sand. The other half can be sphagnum moss, vermiculite or fully composted organic soil.
Scatter the agave seed on the surface of the potting mix. Some varieties of agave seeds require light to germinate, so do not cover them, or cover them very lightly with fine sand.
Water pots by placing them in a shallow pan filled with water that is half their depth. When the potting mix is moist through, remove the pot from the water pan and allow it to drain.
Place the pot in a ziplock bag. This helps maintain the moisture level required for germination.
Place the pot in bright, indirect sunlight in a warm place. Maintain a nighttime temperature no lower than 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds takes two to three weeks to germinate but they may germinate erratically over a longer period of time. Remove the plastic when seedlings appear.

Water agave seedlings sparingly about twice weekly for the first few weeks, just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Agave seedlings can be transplanted to small, individual pots when they have two or three leaves
