Don't be put off by the unwieldy name; ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead aren't out for blood, they just want to mess you up a bit. The band's hard-hitting sound, a purposefully over-the-top mixture of punk, goth, thrash, and Sonic Youth-style avant rock, is just jarring enough to make you stand up and take notice of the collective angst being vented, but just accessible enough to appeal to those whose ears have been realigned by years of high volume. Hell, a big label like Interscope wouldn't have signed them if they didn't think they could move a few units. Regardless of their commercial prospects, Trail of Dead strike an agreeable balance here between structure and chaos, melody and fury.
Editorial reviews
8 out of 10 - ...[They] sound as if they were born to a life of unfettered noise....[The album] manages the neat trick of sounding simultaneously untutored and highly focused...
NME (03/02/2002)
...Hardcore punk outbursts alternate with art-rock feedback flightd and dreamy bots of melody that somehow fuse into a coherent, often spectacular, album... - Rating: A-
Entertainment Weekly (03/08/2002)
...Invigorating....Business as usual: chaotic, highbrow, and indebted to Sonic Youth...
Mojo (03/01/2002)
7 out of 10 - ...the band's most obviously emo album to date...
Alternative Press (03/01/2002)
3 stars out of 5 - ...There is a sense of looking back [here]. The more structured melodies echo the melancholic brief of '90s grunge...
Q (02/01/2002)
3.5 stars out of 5 - ...These Texas screamers have built a castle atop their notorious [audio] wreckage with their third album: forbidding and imposing on the outside, grand and luxurious within. Trail of Dead still play as if they get a bonus for every mike they blow out...
Rolling Stone (03/14/2002)
Ranked #7 on CMJ's Top 10 of 2002 - ...Runs the gamut from gut-constricting noise...to hum-in-your-head-for-days numbers that hone in on melody rather than brute force...
