Recorded at The Magic Shop, New York, New York and Sunset Sound Factory, Los Angeles, California.
On his second album, the Canadian singer-songwriter proves that his stellar debut wasn't just a flash in the pan. Sexsmith is possessed of an eerie, cracked tenor that invests his songs with a quirky kind of innocence. Accordingly, his most obvious influences are man-child pop savants like Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson who, like Sexsmith, have applied their skewed compositional mastery to songs that express a longing for an unattainable purity.
Mitchell Froom's production is more low-key here than on Sexsmith's debut, and the singer's voice is more fully in command. Whether reveling in a child's naivete about death ("Pretty Little Cemetery") or casting aspersions on his own worldly mask ("Thinly Veiled Disguise"), Sexsmith's assured songcraft and emotional delivery make OTHER SONGS a satisfying experience.
Editorial reviews
...The album's 14 new compositions observe small but significant events with understated insight, and the sublimely simple arrangements consistently bring out the material's strengths. - Rating: A
Entertainment Weekly
...His songs are poetic, but there is an inherent populist pitch making them eminently approachable. More than that, he invokes kindness and understanding in his songs and from his listeners. That ability is not just laudable....it's a miracle.
Option (11/01/1997)
...the follow up to Ron's 1995 debut is another lovely showcase....the Canadian is still setting up his stall as a singer/songwriter, deep and intimate....The mood and the images recall Paul Simon's GRACELAND, which isn't bad either...
NME (06/28/1997)
...an angelic tenor reminiscent of Roy Orbison, anchored by a modest rural drawl....His songs have a timeless quality, as if they never were written at all but had simply been waiting all these years for the right singer...
Musician (08/01/1997)
Ranked #33 in the Village Voice's 1997 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll.
Village Voice (02/24/1998)
