This wonderful box was made in Hall in Tirol (Austria) and is marked holzwaren (wooden ware) ALNU and Hall in Tirol.
The box and lid are intricately carved in intersecting swirls and scallops. Some of the smaller cuts are no more than a millimeter. It is truly an exquisite work.
I do not know what the wood is. Certainly not walnut, cherry, rosewood or mahogony. The finish is typical of what was used in early 1930s furniture and wooden accessories.
At 5 inches in diameter it is the size of a powder box, tea caddy or tobacco. The lid fits very tightly and never attempt to remove it by the knob. It is threaded so screws on. It has never held anything as the inside is as pristinely clean and odor free as when new. The box base is 2 inches high and the lid with knob adds about another inch.
Condition is near mint. There are a couple of flecks of finish missing but otherwise this is a perfect box and lid. It has a penciled price on the bottom that was probably the original price when made. There is no sign of any other price sticker having been applied.
