DESCRIPTIONAlthough barley grass powder is the best functional food for supplying nourishment and removing toxins from human cells, its functional components have also had significant positive effects on health. Between 2008 and 2017, we conducted systematic strategies for the functional ingredients of barley grass, based on the extensive databases, especially the PubMed, Baidu, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI, in order to better understand the preventive and therapeutic role of barley grass for chronic diseases. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), flavonoids, saponarin, lutonarin, superoxide dismutase (SOD), K, Ca, Se, tryptophan, chlorophyll, vitamins (A, B1, C, and E), dietary fibre, polysaccharide, alkaloid, metallothioneins, and polyphenols are just a few of the functional ingredients abundant in barley grass. Barley grass improves digestion, reduces hyperuricemia, prevents hypoxia, cardiovascular diseases, fatigue, and constipation, eases atopic dermatitis, is a calcium supplement, enhances cognition, and promotes sleep, among other health benefits. It also has anti-diabetic, blood pressure-regulating, immune-boosting, liver-protecting, anti-acne/detoxifying, and antidepressant effects. These findings suggest that barley grass may be one of the best functional foods for preventing chronic diseases and the best source of raw materials for the modern diet structure in fostering the growth of a significant health industry. They also suggest that the GABA, flavonoids, SOD, K-Ca, vitamins, and tryptophan mechanisms of barley grass may play a preventive and therapeutic role for chronic diseases. This study can be used as scientific support for the development of novel barley grass-based medications and functional diets for the treatment of chronic disorders.
