The calycanthus or anemone tree or Pompadour tree is a deciduous shrub that takes on a beautiful yellow color in autumn.
It is part of the Calycanthaceae family like its cousin the chimonanthus.
From May to August fragrant flowers bloom (very fruity smell) resembling small water lilies, their ribbon-like petals are of a beautiful dark red color.
It owes its nickname of Pompadour tree to the botanist Pierre Joseph Buchoz because it was the "darling" of the nobles at the time of La Pompadour. Indeed, this shrub was planted in the gardens of beautiful residences and castles where its Abundant scarlet blooms fragrant the surroundings with the scent of strawberries, then ripe apples, or melon. Even its downy foliage perfumed the hand of whoever rubbed it.
