The Amur cork tree is a tree with a spreading habit, very hardy (-25°C), native to Manchuria and northern China, introduced into Western Europe in the middle of the 19th century. And Love, here, is not sentiment, but the river that separates Manchuria from Siberia.
Its thick, light grey, very cracked, corky bark is its particularity, without it producing cork.
It remains very popular for its ornamental aspect with its deciduous, pinnate leaves, 25 to 35cm long, with up to 13 pointed oval leaflets
They are glossy light green above and glaucous bluish below, then turn golden yellow in fall. When crushed, they are aromatic and give off a strong smell of turpentine.
The tree is dioecious: small greenish-white unisexual flowers, forming erect pubescent panicles, 6 to 8cm, appear in June. On female trees, the flowers give way to bluish-black spherical fruits, which ripen in the fall.
