The pheasant tree (we also say "pheasant tree"), despite its name, is not a tree, but a shrub. It is native mainly to the Himalayas (Tibet) and the mountainous regions of southwestern China and grows between 2000 and 3000 meters above sea level.
Its name is derived from that of a judge, a great lover of gardens: W. Leycester.
It forms a clump 1.50 to 2.50 m high with erect stems somewhat reminiscent of those of a bamboo, not by their rigidity but because they are hollow, have well-marked knots and that at their level depart from the secondary leaves and stems.
The large deciduous and opposite leaves are pure green, sometimes with bluish reflections, simple and in the shape of a very elongated heart with a fine tip.
From June to September, hanging spikes of white flowers surrounded by purple bracts follow one another; they are carried by the branches of the year.
The fruits that form immediately are berries that turn vinous red and then black. They attract birds, especially pheasants. This feature has earned this shrub the name of pheasant tree.
