The Japanese loquat is an extremely interesting small tree for lovers of exotic plants in temperate or Mediterranean zones.The leaves are long (up to about thirty centimeters), persistent, slightly toothed and leathery. The underside of the leaves is downy, with visible veins.
The flowers, like other parts of the tree, are partly covered with down, as the genus name of the loquat suggests (erion comes from the Greek wool). These flowers are small, creamy white in color and grouped in clusters, as the genus name of the Japanese medlar still suggests (botrys meaning cluster). They are deliciously fragrant, which is welcome in the garden during flowering, which occurs between late fall and mid-winter.
Loquats are rounded fruits and are 4 to 5cm in diameter, with a yellow to orange skin depending on the variety. They are juicy, tangy, and refreshing. But the fragility of the fruit makes it difficult to market it on a large scale.
