Coffea arabica, the Arabian coffee tree, is a plant with crinkled and shiny foliage, with beautiful fragrant white flowers, followed by red then black berries containing two seeds (coffee beans). This plant can exceed 5 m in height if it is not pruned. In cultivation or in a container, this shrub will generally have a more modest size, around 1 to 2.5 m in height.
The coffee tree is a tropical plant, which will only grow outdoors in situations of USDA zone 10b and above. Outside of these areas, it can be grown indoors, in a veranda or in a hot greenhouse, with plenty of light. Its cultivation is also possible in an apartment
The leaves of the coffee tree are evergreen, opposite, dark green in color and shiny, and can measure from 10 to 20 cm in length.
There may be 2 to 5 blooms per year depending on drought and humidity conditions. The flowers are white, composed of 5 or 6 petals and gathered in bouquets. Their scent is reminiscent of jasmine.
The fruits, first green, turn yellow, then scarlet red. They are the size of a cherry. They are commonly called "cherries" or "drupe". They grow in tight clusters in the leaf axils of young branches.
