Cycas revoluta, called Japanese sago or Japanese cycas, is a plant native to the Nansei and Ryukyu islands in Japan, as well as southeastern China. Japanese sago is a palm-like plant, generally between 1 and 3 m high, but more rarely can peak at 6 m in height. It is a long-lived plant, and it is one of the most cultivated Cycas.

The foliage of Japanese sago is dark green (the young leaves being softer and lighter in color), and can measure up to 90 to 150 cm in length. These pinnate leaves, very indented, resemble the leaves of tree ferns.
Cycads form cones. They are dioecious plants, so it will take a male plant and a female plant to get seeds. Ovoid and woolly inflorescences are produced by the adult subjects. The male cones, 20 to 40 cm long, exhale a pineapple scent. The female cones are smaller and 10 to 20 cm long.
