It is a species native to Asia, Africa and Europe including the Canary Islands, it is known as barrilla, land or frosty anemone, being a succulent plant covering coastal areas, annual and with creeping stems. It has wide EDIBLE leaves that tend to shrink as the summer progresses. It is a species that loves sunny areas, as well as supporting acid and alkaline soils well, including impoverished saline soils. In the past, the aborigines of the Canary Islands fed on its seeds, crushing them and making a paste with them called Gofio de Vidrio, quite nutritious. Until recently, in times of famine, this food continued to be made. It is recommended to sow the seeds without burying them in a sheltered, bright and warm place, watering by immersing the pot in a dish of water or by spraying so as not to damage the seedlings. The substrate must have good drainage, as the plants have several pairs of leaves, they must be moved to individual pots or on the ground in full sun and significantly reduce watering since the plant accumulates many reserves of liquids in its wide leaves.
