Agapanthus symbolize love, fertility, purity, and beauty. Agapanthus is the only genus in the subfamily Agapanthoideae of the flowering plant family Amaryllidaceae. The name is derived from Greek: agape (love and anthas (Flower).

Agapanthus are an elegant addition to any landscape. They are tough, heat and drought tolerant. Their green foliage serves as a lovely easy-care foundation plant when not in bloom.

- Season: Perennial plant that are early bloomers from spring though summer.
- Foliage: The leaves are long and strappy. They are rather leathery and arranged in two opposite rows.
- Roots: Their long leaves shoot directly out of their rhizome. Large rhizomes have many offshoots. Rhizome are planted in the fall for spring and summer blooms.
- Bloom: Blossoms of the agapanthus appear in clusters at the tips of blooming stems. As these come up from the foliage, the blue blooms are held within a tight green bract to protect them from damage. As they mature, the bracts pull back to reveal many small blue buds. These then bloom in succession, starting at the bottom and working their way up.
