The Rosella plant (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a species of Hibiscus native to the “Olde Worlde” tropics, used for the production of bast fibre, as a dye, as an infusion (like tea), and is used to make jam, jellies, cordials and syrups. It is an annual or perennial herb. The leaves are deeply three- to five-lobed, 8–15cm long, arranged alternately on the stems. The flowers are 8–10cm in diameter, white to pale yellow with a dark red spot at the base of each petal, and have a stout fleshy calyx/fruit at the base, 1–2 cm wide, enlarging to 3–3.5cm, fleshy and bright red as the calyx/fruit matures. It acquires about six months to mature.
