The Bambino, Recognized by many as the greatest baseball player if all time,

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Before joining the New York Yankees in 1920,

The "Sultan of Swat" was a successful pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

Hitting 54 homers as a member of the Yankees the first year, he was soon adored by fans as the Bambino.

He Hit a record-setting 60 homers in 1927. Ruth still holds Major League records for highest slugging percentage in one season (.847 in 1920), highest lifetime slugging percentage (.690), most years leading the league in home runs (12), and most home runs by a left-handed hitter (714).

He was Among the first inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

The Legends of Baseball stamps were issued in Atlanta in conjunction with Major League Baseball's 2000 All-Star Week, which concluded with the 71st All-Star Game at Turner Field.

The stamps were illustrated by Joe Saffold of Savannah, Georgia.
