This wonderful red poppy is a classic! This annual grows to about 60cm with its light green leaves and vivid red flowers.Also known as the Corn poppy or Field poppy, so called because it was once commonly found growing among cultivated fields of grain, with the seeds lying dormant for years and sprouting when the soil was turned. During and after World War I, fields that had been disturbed by battle bloomed with the flowers - and so this poppy became of symbol of that war. Traditionally the poppy was thought to have magical qualities. According to Geoffrey Grigson's An Englishman's Flora, "picking it brought thunder; but poppies placed among the timbers under the roof warded off lightning." Before the widespread use of herbicides, the poppy's abundance among crops, and its vivid red flowers were seen as indicative of earth's life-giving force. Far from a nuisance, the corn poppy was considered a companion to the crop! Good for beds, borders and as a cut flower.
