Yellow Water Poppy Plant, Hydrocleys Nymphoides Very Beautiful Garden Home
These aquatic plants will become bare/loose-rooted and you should plant them when you receive them.
Water Poppy is a beautiful aquatic plant that provides great water coverage.
Provides shelter for fish and frogs from the sun and predators.
When you receive your lotus rhizome, it will come to you with bare roots (not pot). You can repot water lilies any time of year.
During spring, summer, and fall, your water lily will arrive with a few leaves. During the dormant period in winter, there will be no leaves.
If you are growing it in a pond or decorative water bowl, you should put it in a pot at least 20 cm in diameter or even a 4 liter ice cream container will do (eat the ice cream first!).
Use good quality garden soil, i.e. the best for growing vegetables - don't use potting mix as it can contain pine bark and other compost unsuitable for ponds, as they can release the wrong nutrients which then feed the algae.
When planting your lotus, you want the top of the growing tip to be parallel to the top of the pot. Find out how deep you need to plant the lily in the pot so that the tip is level with the top, then fill the pot with soil until roots develop. Place one of the Triffid Garden Water Plant Fertilizer Tablets on top of the soil, place the water lily next to the fertilizer tablet and fill the rest of the pot with soil just below the growing tip. Pat it in vigorously, then place a layer of pebbles or small pebbles around the top to stop the mixture from floating up. Be careful not to cover the growing ends. See photos for planting ideas.
Slowly add water to the container until air bubbles stop. Then you can slowly lower the pot into your pond. Make sure you insert it deep enough to be at least the minimum growth depth stated on the label.
But because the water at the top of the pool is warmer, you may want to place it just below the surface of the water for a few weeks until it establishes itself and new growth appears, then you can lower it.
If you are planting in a dam or lagoon, plant directly at the bottom of the dam. Read in-depth information for water lilies and don't plant deeper than recommended when the dam is full or you will drown your water lily.
If you can't get into the dam and dig a hole to plant the lotus, you can tie the lotus rhizome to a brick or rock with rope or fishing line and sink it to the bottom. Or use tent pegs to hold it in place.
Most dams will have enough nutrients to feed your water lilies during the growing season, but a single Triffid Garden Water Plant Fertilizer Tablet pushed into the root system during planting is a great way to get your lilies growing.
Yabbies love new water lily leaves, so if you have yabbies in your dam you will need to place a fine mesh cage around your water lily. The netting needs to be big enough for new leaves to grow, but small enough for the yabbies to get through. Once a water lily is formed, yabbies will have no interest in the older growth.
FLOWERING: Produces yellow flowers with black centers in summer and fall
HIGH: SOval-shaped leaves float on the surface of the water or just above it.
POSITION: Grows in full sun to semi shade. Perfect for small garden ponds or growing between pond edges and deeper water in larger ponds and dams. Fully submerged from 20 to 40cm depth. Can also be planted in decorative water pots without holes 20 - 40cm deep
FROST: Frost resistant.
CARE: Fertilize in spring with one of Triffid Park's water plant fertilizer tablets to encourage new growth and flowers early in the growing season. Then again in early summer and early fall to encourage healthy growth and green foliage.
Plant anything from small tubs without holes, to ponds, lakes and dams.
In decorative pots, think of them as potted plants, growing in water, then you can plant them on your patio, porch, balcony, etc.
FERTILIZER: Triffid Park Aquatic Plant Fertilizer Tablets are available on our Assorted Aquatic Plants page. There are no nutrients in pools or plastic tubs, so this is a definite must when potting your aquatic plants, and for fertilizing 3 times per year.
