Calcium levulinate dihydrate is a water-soluble, non-toxic, bio-based levulinate (C5) salt of calcium. Calcium levulinate can be used alone, or with calcium lactate, calcium chloride, and other calcium compounds. Furthermore, calcium levulinate has been considered as a useful chemical intermediate in the production of levulinate biofuels. Due to non-toxicity and high water solubility, calcium levulinate replaces mainstream calcium salts such as Ca(NO3)2, CaH2, Ca(OH)2, CaSO4·2H2O, CaCrO4, CaTiO3, etc. In other applications, the low freezing points of calcium levulinate solutions makes it an effective replacement for corrosive traditional deicers and automobile coolants such as rock salt or hot salt hence offering the benefits of reduced environmental toxicity.
