How to grow African baobab from seeds (instructions)
1. Scar the outer casing of the baobab seed shell. The seeds are kidney-shaped, so try to scar on the outside of the curve, toward the center of the seed. Use a small metal file or sharp knife to make a nick through the surface of the black seed coat. Do not remove too much, just enough to see a little white showing through the shell.
This increases germination rates and mimics the natural process of germination in the wild, when the seed coat would normally be broken down in the digestive track of an animal that ate a baobab fruit.
2. Soak the seeds in hot tap water for 24 hours then remove them from the water and dry them off.
3. Mix one part sand and one part peat moss. Fill your plastic pots or seed tray up to the top with the mix and gently firm it with your hand so the surface is about a quarter to half an inch below the rim of the pot.
4. Water the pots and let all of the excess water drip out of the bottom.
5. Poke a hole about half an inch deep in the center of each pot. You can also make rows in a tray or plant several seeds equally spaced in a shallow pot with a wide diameter.
6. Place one seed in each hole or evenly spaced an inch or so apart in trays. Cover them with potting mix so the seeds are buried to a depth of about half an inch.
7. Water the soil and let the excess water drain away.
8. Place the pot in a warm and bright, but not sunny location such as a few feet from an eastern or western window. The seeds will germinate and begin to sprout in about a week to 10 days. Keep the soil slightly moist but not wet. When the plants reach 2 to 3 inches tall, pot them into individual containers with well-draining soil and move them to a brighter location.
