Hosta 'Humpback Whale'
A Giant!
Hosta 'Humpback Whale' was as elusive as the sea creature it was named after, but it is finally in wholesale production so we are able to offer it to you. Also (actually correctly) known as 'Humpbacked Whale', it forms a huge mound of blue-green corrugated foliage. Individual leaves mature to 17" long by 13" wide and develop a "hump" in the center, thus the name. In 1996 the plant was auctioned off for $3,700.00, so today's price is a bargain. (Seaver)
MATURE HEIGHT: 36".
MATURE SPREAD: 70".
HARDINESS ZONES: 3,4,5,6,7,8,9.
FLOWER: Near white
SUN EXPOSURE: Part sun to shade.
SIZE SHIPPED: 2.5" pot. (plants shipped to California may be bare root and trimmed)
Hostas, also known as Plantain Lily, are hardy garden perennials (they come back every year). Our plants are professionally grown and are guaranteed free from disease, including 'Hosta Virus X'. If you want the best you have come to the right place!
Did you know... Blue hostas are actually green hostas with a waxy covering on the leaves that gives them the wonderful blue color. The "blueness" of a blue hosta depends on the plant age, hosta variety and the location the blue hosta is planted or kept. Sunlight slowly melts the wax off the leaves turning them back to green, thus a shadier location will protect the blue color longer into the growing season. Blue hostas always re-emerge the next year with a new waxy coating, thus making them blue again. Young blue hostas often only develop the wax after a year or more of growing.
Our plants have been over-wintered here in the upper Midwest to ensure strength and hardiness and to encourage blooming the first year in your garden. Our plants are grown outdoors where Mother Nature helps us produce the best plants possible. Our potted plants can be planted at your convenience, just keep them watered until you are ready to put them into the ground. We include complete planting instructions with all orders. This plant is ready for your garden!
Our plant photos are a representation of mature specimens. The plants we sell are not full grown but they are well established and happily on their way to becoming all they can be. Don't forget that tissue cultured plants may need another year or more to show their full size, color and texture.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO BUY IN OUR STORE, NO WORRIES, WE ALWAYS HAVE A GUARANTEE OR REFUND IF NEEDED.
