  • Description
The Only United States Commemorative Postage Stamp Issued Recognizing Osteopathic Medicine,

Osteopathic medicine was established as a medical profession in 1892.

A Civil War surgeon named Andrew T. Still founded the profession and created the first college of osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri.

Osteopathic medicine plays an important and growing role in America's health care system. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) are physicians fully trained to diagnose illness, prescribe drugs and perform surgery.

The federal government and the American Medical Association recognize D.O.s and M.D.s as equals. D.O.s, like M.D.s, are licensed to provide comprehensive medical care in all 50 states.

Osteopathic physicians use the most modern and scientifically accepted methods of diagnosis and treatment. They work in hospitals, clinics, private offices, nursing homes, and other health care settings. D.O.s can be found in all medical specialties - from neurosurgery to pediatrics - and serve as health care policy leaders at the local, state and national levels.

It is the osteopathic philosophy that distinguishes D.O.s from M.D.s. Osteopathic doctors are trained to view the human body as a single organism. Because D.O.s consider all body systems as interrelated and dependent upon one another for good health, they treat specific illness in the context of the whole person.

In addition to using all forms of medical treatment, D.O.s use osteopathic manipulative techniques to diagnose illness and treat their patients. Reflecting their interest in treating the whole patient, many D.O.s become family practitioners.
