What is Wheat Straw Plastic and is it Eco Friendly?
Wheat is the grain that is used to make flour, bread and wheat products like noodles. Wheat straw is the byproduct that is left over after the wheat is harvested, and is then used to make a plastic like substance that is a healthier, eco-friendly alternative.
Wheat straw contains cellulose and when broken down, new products can be made from it. The process creates the opportunity to make different kinds of polymers,... but natural ones!
Perks and Benefits of Wheat Straw Plastic:
- Wheat straw is completely biodegradable. Usually, wheat straw plastic will decompose in your compost in 3-6 months and turn into a natural fertiliser, or take it to a compost facility to have it turned into compost in only 1-2 months.
It's also:
- Non-allergenic
- Reusable
- BPA free
- Gluten free
- Easy to clean
- a sturdy and strong material.
It’s completely renewable and sustainable and can also be turned back into pulp by being melted and used to create different products again and again.
Of course this is microwave and freezer safe and without odour and will not go mouldy.
Wheat straw plastic is very versatile and can be used for many applications. Because of the heat resistance of up to 100° Celsius / 220° Fahrenheit, it can be used for reusable travel mugs. It is a great way of reducing single use plastics !
What is the Impact of Wheat Straw Plastic on the Environment?
A lot of energy is used to produce plastic and the emission of carbon dioxide gasses is very high. Because wheat straw is natural, it requires much less energy to produce. The natural fibers make the material sturdy enough without requiring the addition of toxins like oil. Wheat straw can be used to create paper, so this is saving our forests as well.
Traditionally the straw was burnt after the wheat harvest, which means that more CO2 is released into the air, so when we use this, it is evaded. Wheat Straw is beneficial for our planet and global warming, thereby reducing our carbon footprint.
