This is a great old tea towel that has had considerable use but is still in quite presentable condition. According to the blurb on the scroll the current George Inn was built in 1677 near the Globe Theatre. It is the last galleried inn remaining in London. Charles Dickens mentioned the George in Little Dorrit. It is believed Dr. Johnson also visited the inn on his way to Streatham.
The graphic shows the George with a cast of Dickensian characters in front. It is marked made in Ireland, Fast Colours, All Pure Linen, Reg. pend., Lamont.
It measures 20 x 30 inches. This is high quality linen and the condition is very good vintage. A black smudge at the top edge and a tiny pin hole. Many years of use or display remain.
