If you're replacing the pads, you will be required to replace the brake sensor wire. The old sensor is useless after it wears out.
The wire is mounted on one of the pads and acts as a warning device when your pad is worn out so that your rotors and calipers will not be damaged. The sensor wire wears as your pads wear so it cannot be reused and must be replaced to maintain the safety of your brake system.
Some repair shops will tie the broken wires together and defeat the sensor and the built in safety purpose, however, when your replacement pads wear out, the warning brake light will not come on again. Eventually you will hear the scraping of the metal backing plate of your pads on the brake rotor alerting you of a possible damaged to the rotor and caliper.
For your safety and peace of mind, replace the brake sensor wire.
