Japanese Stewartia is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree that grows 20 to 40 feet tall. It is slow growing with a low branching, multi-stemmed, pyramidal to oval form. Japanese Stewartia is an all-season performer. It features stunning bark with a distinctive branching pattern that exfoliates in contrasting color strips of gray, orange, and reddish brown once the trunk attains a diameter of 2 to 3 inches. Serrated foliage emerges bronzy purple in spring, develops into a dark green by summer, and turns attractive shades of reddish-orange and burgundy in autumn. In midsummer, glamorous cup-shaped, white camellia like flowers, to 2 1/2 inches, with showy orange-yellow anthers opening in random succession. Flowers are followed by pointed brown seed pods, which are persistent but not very ornamental. Species name of pseudocamellia means false camellia and is a member of the tea family.
