When the late Wendell Bedichek and Neal Tannahill first began work on a government textbook, they wanted to produce a book that would explain the basics of Texas government in a fashion that was both easy to understand and interesting to read.

They knew from experience in the classroom that many students are poorly informed about government in general and Texas politics in particular. Consequently, they set out to explain the subject clearly, assuming their audience of student readers would have little prior knowledge of Texas government or political science.
