By the decision of the XXII Congress of the public organization “Akhova ptushak Baskaўshchyny”, a grouse was selected as the bird of 2020.
The capercaillie mainly inhabits old coniferous and mixed (with a significant proportion of pine) upland forests, less often horse marshes, rarely found in young pine forests.
Capercaillie in Belarus is considered a hunting species, despite the small population - about 9 thousand birds.
These birds got their name due to the peculiarity during the mating season - it is worse to hear and lose vigilance. The song of males during mating consists of two parts: during the first part, the bird hears everything, and during the second - the male does not hear anything around! This makes him defenseless in front of hunters.
The project was prepared with the assistance of the public organization “Akhova ptushak Baskaўščiny”.
The stamp was printed with the emblems of the BirdLife International, a worldwide association of conservation organizations for the protection of birds, and the Belarusian public organization, Akhova Ptushak Baskaўščiny.
