Description: Generally subtropical to tropical. Extremely fast growing vine in where temperatures stay above 28F. Usually found in the Andes at elevations of 6000-7000ft. Vines usually produce by the second year and can yield up to 300 fruits a vine when in full production. Beautiful red-pink flowers are borne at the ends of a long stalk. Fruits can ripen year round. The seeds germinate very readily when planted in peat moss and set in a warm spot. The seedlings can be transplanted when 3 months old. How to GrowSunFull Sun or partial shade.WindProtect from high or cold winds as the tendrils may be damaged and do not grow well in salty maritime conditions.ClimateAdverse weather conditions during flowering may affect fruit set. Temperature also affects fertility of the flowers and although the flowers may be forming and opening, fruit set will be affected by low night temperatures in the autumn or spring. SoilGrow best in sandy soil and need a light, well-drained soil as water logged soils will damage the roots.PlantingPlant in a sunny place with excellent drainage and plenty of organic matter.FertiliserPassionfruit are heavy feeders so during the growing season apply a high nitrogen based NPK fertiliser. Apply approximately 100 grams per square metre three times during the growing season.PruningAs fruit is formed on current season wood, prune to a base framework in spring to encourage new growth.PestsRoot rot and nematodes are partially responsible for short life of vines. Make sure the soil does not over wet and waterlogged. Leafhoppers, stink bugs are minor problems of the passionfruit vines.
