Golden Raintree, Koelreuteria paniculata, Tree Seeds Fast Growth, Easy to Grow, Very Hardy, Showy Summer Flowers, Ornamental Fruits, Fall Color, Shade Tree, Street Tree, Cold, Heat, Wind, Drought and Urban Tolerant, Bonsai Golden Raintree is a fast-growing, deciduous tree reaching about 30 feet in height. At maturity, it has a rounded crown, with a spread equal to or greater than the height. It has compound leaves that give it an overall lacy appearance. The leaves turn yellow before falling. The bark is light gray-brown and becomes furrowed with age. Golden Raintree is perhaps most striking in the fall with its large clusters of showy yellow flowers. The bright yellow flowers 1/2 inch wide appear in early summer in long, terminal, panicles 10 to 15 inches. Falling blossoms may or may not resemble "golden rain", but the fallen blossoms often form an attractive golden carpet under the tree. The flowers are followed by 2 inch red-purple seed pods, which are equally dramatic! The fruit is a papery seed capsule which somewhat resembles Chinese lanterns. In warm climates seed is produced in great quantities and there are always seedlings beneath a mother tree. The tree is invasive under these conditions. Golden Raintree is best grown in cooler zones where the shorter growing season prevents formation of seed. Leaf: Alternate, pinnately (or partially bi-pinnately) compound, irregular serrations or lobes on leaflets, 8 to 18 inches long, 7 to 17 leaflets, deep green above, lighter below turning yellow in the Fall. Flower: Bright yellow with a splash of orange; occur on 10 to 15 inch long, many branched, terminal panicles; individual flowers about 1/2 inch wide; appearing in early summer, very attractive. Fruit: Papery, triangular capsule, 1 to 2 inches long, in clusters, containing three hard, black, globular seeds, initially yellow-green, later turning brown, ornamental. Twig: Stout, reddish brown, numerous lighter lenticels, somewhat zig-zag, buds round, leaf scar shield-shaped. Bark: Silvery gray, flat ridge tops with reddish brown shallow furrows.
