It is native to subtropical areas of China. Tung oil Tree is grown commercially primarily for their seeds, which produce an oil used for a variety of purposes including usage in paints, varnishes and wood finishes. Primarily cultivated for its oil, it also makes a lovely ornamental tree. Tung oil Tree provides early spring flowers before the foliage, large heart shaped leaves and good summer shade with a gracefully spreading round-crowned. Leaf: Light green, 10 inch, pointed, ovate-cordate, on long stalks with red glands at the top of each petiole. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. Flower: Monoecious (both male and female flowers are found on the same plant), 1 inch, 5 to 7 petaled, Catalpa-like, white with a orangish-red eye, blooming in early spring on large terminal clusters (lax cymes) consisting of about 60 flowers. Fruit: Rounded, dark green, 2 to 3 inch, ripening to brown in fall. Each fruit contains 4 to 5 seeds. Twig: Smooth brownish-gray branches arch and fork with a tropical flair. WARNING: All parts of the Tung Tree are toxic if ingested. The oil pressed from Tung seeds makes an exceptionally fine wood finish. Often sold under the name "Teak oil", Tung oil dries quickly to form a tough, glossy, waterproof surface. Tung oil is also used as a drying agent for paints and varnishes; as waterproofing for paper, cloth and ceramic products and also in the manufacture of linoleum, oilcloth, inks, resins, artificial leather, lubricants, brake linings and cleaning and polishing compounds. It is used in coatings for food containers and electronic parts. During World War II, the Chinese developed a way to process Tung oil to supplement gasoline for motor fuel. Legend has it that their ancestors used it to seal the Great Wall. Soot from burned Tung oil is a main ingredient in India ink.
