Eucalyptus citriodora, Lemon Scented Gum, Tree Seeds Fast Growth, Exfoliating Bark, Fragrant Leaves, Evergreen, Heat, Drought, Salt and Wind Tolerant Eucalyptus citriodora or Lemon Scented Gum, is a stately evergreen tree native to Queensland, Australia. The trees have 2 forms of leaves; the juvenile leaves being lanceolate up to 6 inches long with a rough sandpapery feel whereas the adult leaves are light green, glossy, and lanceolate, up to 6 inches long. The adult leaves are known as phyllodes and are more highly drought adapted. In fact, phyllodes do not have a traditional leaf lamina, instead the green leaf blade, in a developmental sense, is an outgrowth of the petiole. Both sets of leaves have a strong lemony scent when crushed. Leaves yield a lemon-scented oil rich in citronellal and favored in perfumery. The trunks and branches of this species are powdery white to pinkish and the trunks are usually very straight. The exfoliating bark is smooth, gray, peeling off in thin irregular scales or patches and becoming mottled, exposing whitish or faintly bluish inner layer with powdery surfaces appearing dimpled. In nature the trees will reach from 75 to 100 feet tall. They are a very popular tree in California and Arizona. While this species get very big in nature, its size is easily control with selective pruning and container size when grown in the greenhouse setting. Trees bloom in winter in nature, in the greenhouse they bloom in late winter to early spring. The white blooms are not very distinctive. The blooms are followed by woody urn-shaped capsules about 3/8 of an inch wide. Say the word 'Eucalyptus' and many people will instantly think of koalas and the smell of the tree's oil. However, Eucalyptus is not a single species but an entire genus with almost 750 species. Aside from a few exceptions from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and one from the Philippines, Eucalyptus is native exclusively to Australia. The oil extracted from its leaves has numerous medicinal uses but can be toxic in large quantities. Koalas and some possums are tolerant to its effects, which is just as well as the koala feeds on virtually nothing but Eucalyptus leaves.
