River She-Oak, Casuarina cunninghamiana, Tree Seeds Fast Growth, Adaptable, Tropical Evergreen, Shade Tree, Screen/Windbreak, Street Tree, Heat, Salt, Drought, Poor Soil and Urban Tolerant, Timber, Bonsai The River She-Oak, presumed to be native to Australia, is a fast growing, medium-sized narrow evergreen tree that occurs naturally along the banks of freshwater streams, rivers and adjacent flats, commonly in sands, gravels and occasionally limestone. Typically, it grows 15 to 35 feet tall, 6 to 15 feet wide and forms a strong, buttressed trunk. It is used very successfully in streetscapes and landscapes, often planted in attractive clusters or as screening, utilizing its soft pendulous foliage and narrow habit to good effect. Adaptable to a variety of sites and poor soils, it will grow on many various sites, as long as water logging is not constant. It can also tolerate comparatively dry sites and responds well to structural pruning and can be coppiced each 5+ years to form a dense screen. The root systems of River She-Oak are vigorous and matted and it can be difficult to grow turf or other plants under these trees. River She-Oak is dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. Flowering occurs during February to March. Female plants may bear woody cones in an indehiscent state for protracted periods but in tropical areas cones shed seed soon after maturation. River She-Oak is a nitrogen fixing tree suitable for cultivation across a wide range of climates, extending from cool temperate areas to the seasonally dry tropics. Under cultivation it tolerates drought, seasonal water logging and is very salt and wind tolerant but requires protection from grazing animals during the establishment phase. It has been used in agro forestry, particularly where shelterbelts area required to protect crops and livestock from wind, as it makes an excellent windbreak. Uses Excellent windbreak, good ornamental attributes.
