Antique Burmese Style Royal Shan Bronze Teaching Buddha Statue - 44cm/18"Measures – (Height) 44cm/18”Antique Shan Royal style Buddha statue from Burma seated in the Teaching mudra or pose. The statue is similar to that of the Jambupati Buddha image of the Burmese Shan-type dating to the 17th-18th century. The Buddha wears costly royal jewelry. Under the royal jewelry the Buddha wears a monk’s robe, the border of which falls over the left arm. The Buddha, which for the most part corresponds to the characteristics of the bronze “Jambupati” type, wears a traditional Shan-diadem with a lotus bud ushnisha. A high ketumala finial rises above the crown with two elaborate flanges.The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. He is seated upon a lotus petal base which can be separated from the Buddha. The Buddha is seated in the half lotus position with his hand raised in front of his chest in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and torso.
