19th Century Thai Lopburi Bronze Vajrayana Buddha Statue with Halo - 12cm/5" Measures – (Height) 12cm/5” A 19th century Lopburi Buddha statue from Thailand. The Buddha is enthroned holding a vajra and tribu. In Buddhism the vajra is the symbol of Vajrayana, one of the three major branches of Buddhism. It implies indestructibility. As a male symbol it is representative of upaya (compassion). Whilst the female bell denotes prajna (wisdom). When held together, in separate hands, it symbolises the union of compassion and wisdom. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. Behind the Buddha is a halo or aureole - the circle of light symbolising his divinity. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
