ARBUCKLES: The Coffee That Won The West - by Francis Fugate (1994, hardcover)
Title/Author: ARBUCKLES: The Coffee That Won The West by Francis Fugate (Texas Western Press) (Hardcover: 233 pages; approx. 12¼" x 9½")
Description: Here's the definitive work on the Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Co. and its founders, from John Arbuckle's birth in 1839 through the company's eventual absorption by General Foods Corporation. Chapters are devoted to:
1. Wine of Arabia
2. A Staple of the American West
3. John Arbuckle: The Coffee King
4. Building the Arbuckle Empire
5. John Arbuckle v. The Sugar Trust
6. Coffee on the Range
7. The Arbuckles Go West
8. Mose Drachman: Arbuckles' Salesman in the Southwest
9. Hosteen Cohay: "Mister Coffee"
10. Arbuckles Coffee Trade Cards
11. The Arbuckles Mystique
The above text is well-illustrated with black and white photos and drawings, and it's then followed by a 43-page section of full-color illustrations of a selection Arbuckles' trade cards, along with a few handbills, premiums and other interesting items.
The book wraps up with a 3-section appendix covering:
A. First Advertisement for Coffee in the English Language
B. Patents Granted to John Arbuckle and/or Under the Control of Arbuckle Brothers
C. Arbuckle Brothers' Labels and Trademarks in the Order of Usage
...followed by Notes and a Bibliography.
All in all, this is a fantastic "coffee" table book and a must-have for any Arbuckle Coffee collector or enthusiast. Original publisher's list price was $50.00.
Copyright: 1994, Texas Western Press, The University of Texas at El Paso.
Condition: Very good+, I'd say. While the dust jacket is a bit ragged along the edges, with tears at the bottom corners (see photos), the book itself is in excellent condition, showing no signs of use.
**NOTE**: Shipping charges are discounted when more than one of my items are purchased at the same time. See what else I have to offer!
