Alexey Gan (1893-1942)

Moscow, 1931

Rodchenko was not alone in turning to advertising — his fellow- thinker and the main ideologist on this difficult path was Mayakovsky. The poet considered this one of the more urgent tasks, as he outlined in his “Agitation and Advertising" article published in June of 1923 in the ““Tovarishch Terentiy" magazine in Yekaterinburg. Mayakovsky wrote: “We abandoned advertising, looking down our noses at this “bourgeois gimmick”. During the NEP, we should be using it to promote state and proletarian organizations, businesses, products, using all of our enemies' weapons. In this, we are but pups. We need to learn... Think about
advertising!"
