Victorian Trade Card - Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company - "WILL MAKE THE EFFORT" (#48)
SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or the fundamentally clueless. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by D. McCarthy and features a new father of twins and a curmudgeon.
The back carries Arbuckles' familiar "Four Points" sales pitch.

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Fine, I'd say. This card is only very lightly soiled, with just slightly worn corners. (Please see scans.)
