It received airplay , and some limited attention , before it was a single, in June 1971, when New York's WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM played the song to mark the closing of the famous "rock ballroom" Fillmore East. United Artists released it as a single in November 1971. The song very quickly reached Number One in the US and Number Two in the UK , and in 1991 a re-release made it back into the UK Top Ten.
