Le Grand History Miller, E. K. and Hall, D.G. Signed Merced Country Historical Society, 2007 lst. 0972931856 Softcover in good condition, text is clean and unmarked, binding tight. Signed on title page by Miller and Hall, cover shows little signs of wear. This is a history of Le Grand California. One of the early if not first to build a camp in the area was John C Fremont, in the 1840ies on his way to Mariposa Creek area chasing Indians. In 1848 Fremont wrote a letter saying he would not accept this land in exchange for the coastal properties he had thought he had purchased. This was due to Indians. He had given $300,000 to the American Consul Larkin to purchase the costal land but because he was called to Washington and became involved in politics he failed to keep track of the land purchase and ended up in Mariposa which is just above Le Grand. As it turned out he was in on the ground floor of the gold rush and the southern mines. So starts the history of the town located in the Sierra foothills.
