hrysoprase, also called chrysophrase, chrysoprasus or the stone of Venus, is named from the Greek ‘chrusos’ meaning gold and ‘prason’ meaning leek in reference to its color. Chrysoprase is a rare form of green chalcedony, a member of the quartz group. This stone’s green colour is due to it’s nickel content. Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa and Russia. Chrysoprase is considered to be one of the rarest and most valuable varieties of chalcedony quartz. Chrysoprase is highly prized for its opalescent minty, apple-green color, which is especially unique and is owed to its distinctive coloring agent.
A stone sometimes referred to as the Mother of Jade, Chrysoprase is a beautiful opalescent apple green color of a variety of Chalcedony. Most often green gemstones owe their color to chromium or vanadium. Chrysoprase is different though, as it derives it’s beautiful coloration from the nickel content it contains.
Chrysoprase color can fade under prolonged exposure to heat or direct light, but in many cases, the color may be restored after absorption of moisture.
Therefore one must pay extra attention in the care of this stone.
