Piper cubeba, cubeb or tailed pepper is a plant in genus Piper, cultivated for its fruit and essential oil. It is mostly grown in Java and Sumatra, hence sometimes called Java pepper. The bitter and hot cubebs have been a popular substitute for black pepper in 16.th and 17.th century Europe, but have fallen much in disfavour since then. Pungent and bitter with a strong terpene aroma. The aroma is variously described dry–woody, warm–camphora­ceous and spicy–peppery, sometimes also compared with allspice.
