This is a companion volume to "Songs Of The High North" and is probably the most popular of the collections of Service's verse.  It contains his two famous ballads of the Yukon god-rush days: 'The Shooting Of Dan McGrew' and 'The Cremation Of Sam McGee.'



Robert Service was born in Preston, Lancashire in January 1874.  He spent his childhood in Scotland and as a young man emigrated to Canada.  Here he started his life of wanderings and adventure which gave birth to those rhymes, songs, ballads, and poems, distinctive for the vigour and rugged rhythms, which have reached a worldwide audience.



His eight years in the Yukon soon after the Gold Rush were an experience which inspired him until the end of his life.  His travels included the Pacific coasts of the United States and Mexico, Turkey, and southern Europe.  He served as an ambulance man in the thick of the fighting during World War I and then made his home in France.  He escaped to the United States in 1940 and after the war returned to France, eventually settling in Monte Carlo, where he died in September 1958.
